The FDA
The last time a new sunscreen filter was approved by the FDA was in 2006. This approval was for Mexoryl SX, a unique organic filter developed by L'Oreal, highly protective against short UVA waves. This was the first new sunscreen filter approved by the FDA since 1988. Mexoryl SX is particularly effective against short UVA waves and is photo-stable, which means it does not degrade when exposed to the sun for long periods. It's a component of L'Oreal's daily moisturizing cream with sunscreen, along with other ingredients like Octocrylene and Avobenzone, to provide broad-spectrum sun protection.

In contrast, as of 2022, no new UV filters have been added to the FDA’s approved list for sale in the US since 2002. The current over-the-counter (OTC) monograph lists 14 chemical UV filters and 2 mineral UV filters. This indicates a significant lag in the approval of new UV filters in the US compared to other countries.

Therefore, the last new sunscreen filter approved before Mexoryl SX was in 2002, and then Mexoryl SX broke this gap in 2006. Since then, there hasn't been a new filter approved up to 2022.

About the Dogs

In the vibrant canine trio of Ike, Lincoln, and Gabby, a unique blend of personalities and breeds comes together to create a lively household. Ike, the German Wirehaired Pointer is often the ringleader in outdoor escapades. Ike is a 2 Year Canine Cancer Survivor! He had surgery to remove a mouth cancer that was luckily found on accident during his hip PRP injections in 2022. Lincoln, the German Shorthaired Pointer, has been enjoying the mild Minnesota Winter. He has been enjoying checking out and protecting the backyard where a fox spotted on camera twice!

Gabby, my dad’s Silky Terrier, brings a dash of sass and charm to the mix. She got a bit muddy during a trek in the dew and got a bath this week! She was happy to get the bath since it paid her three pupperoni dog treats. Together, Ike, Lincoln, and Gabby form a delightful and diverse canine family, each bringing their own unique flair to their loving homes.
