Welcome to Issue 39 of the No BS Beauty Bulletin!

In this week’s Juicy Beauty News, we’re diving into the latest in skincare innovation, from a new dermis-epidermis communication booster to a game-changing Adapinoid shown to outperform retinol for both wrinkle reduction and pigment improvement. Also on the cutting edge, Europe is moving towards alternatives for toxicity testing, and L’Oréal has taken a big step forward in developing human-like 3D-printed skin, which could reshape safety testing and skincare research. And if you’re curious about AI’s impact on skincare routines, check out the interesting results from someone who’s been using an AI-generated regimen for two months now!

On a lighter note, this week’s "What Did I Buy?" list includes a couple of winter prep finds, perfect for embracing the season without sacrificing comfort. The Winner of the Week section discusses some of my favorite nail polish, and the Loser of the Week is about preparing for the oncoming cold winter weather.

In About the Dogs, we have a bit of a somber update. Our beloved Lucy, my sister-in-law’s dog, crossed the Rainbow Bridge this week after a brave battle with kidney disease. Her loss is a reminder of the importance of caring for our pets’ health, including regular dental care, which can play a role in preventing conditions like kidney disease in dogs. Though we’ll miss her dearly, we’re grateful for the joyful years she had with her forever family.

Cameraman’s Corner has been extra busy! Cameraman’s database is officially up and running, helping us keep tabs on all the beauty products in the room, and he’s publishing daily updates on his progress. About the Dogs

Some sad dog news this week.  My Sister-in-Law’s pup Lucy passed away this week.  She had been in and out of the Veterinary Clinic bravely battling kidney disease.  Kidney disease seems to be something that is more common in smaller dogs.  I have had two pups recently pass from the same disease (Gertie and Gipper).  Lucy was a rescue dog and was so lucky to have found her hero, Kari, that adopted her and saved her and gave her a wonderful long and spoiled life.

Kidney disease in dogs is a tough one, and can often be from dental disease:

“Dental disease is a leading cause of chronic kidney failure in older dogs. Bacteria build up on your dog’s teeth and enter the digestive system when eating and drinking. While your dog’s kidneys are designed to filter waste, bacteria can lessen kidney function over time.”

Knowing that Lucy, Gertie, and Gipper were all rescue dogs I start to wonder if their lack of care before being adopted might have something to do with the future kidney failure? Obviously once they were all adopted their dental needs (as well as health needs) were all attended to but perhaps the lack of dental care when they are in the puppy mills and shelters has something to do with it?  I’m not sure if this is the case but I couldn’t help but notice the similarity between all three pups.

This is also a great way to remind everyone to care for their dogs dental needs along with regular check-ups.  To everyone that rescues an animal- thank you and may your kindness!

The Rainbow Bridge Poem

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Winner of the Week - Cupcake Nail Polish

Over three years now I have had acrylic nails.  It’s been enjoyable getting them done and I love my nail lady, however, three years has taken a toll on my real nails and nail bed.  I began to notice that the time in between fills became shorter and shorter and the acrylics would begin to break off, taking the entire nail underneath with them.  Definitely very painful to deal with as well as making my hands look like they were run through a blender!   Cleaning the house, lifting weights, and cold weather has been particularly challenging for my hands and nails.

I’ve decided it is time to give my hands and nails a break from acrylics and go back to doing them myself.  This is mostly so I can let them grow out and get them more hydrated.  Everyday tasks such as typing and cleaning are also easier with short nails.

There is nothing exciting about going back to doing my nails myself with the exception of fun polish colors! Cupcake Polish has the largest collection of bright, sparkly, and holographic polishes.  At least I have something to look forward to for the near future!  Cupcake Polish is a small business founded by a gal named Sara Casey.  They make all their polishes in small hand mixed batches.  Lastly, the polishes are relatively affordable, even compared to drugstore brands.

These are some of my favorite shades at Cupcake Polish:

Loser of the Week - Winter

Winter is so tough on people in so many ways! Coldness, dryness, and snow can all wreak havoc on your skin. Dryness from cold weather wicks away hydration in the skin. The dry air pulls all the moisture and humidity out of our hair, and nails making them brittle and prone to breaking. As if those aren’t enough for our skin to handle indoor furnaces, hot showers, and high winds also damage skin leaving it feeling dry and flaky.

There are tips I have to fight the damage winter causes to skin, and being from Minnesota I should be an expert on fighting cold weather! The coldest days in winter here can see the thermometer reaching -40 F. That is freaking cold!!!

Humidifiers. Humidifiers can help increase the humidity in your house. If you have a large house just keeping a humidifier in your bedroom can be extremely helpful. If can also help your sinuses, nose, and throat. One I’d recommend is from Honeywell, and you can even add a drop or two of essential oils such as peppermint or lavender:

A gentle cleanser that is non-drying is key towards slowing the moisture loss in skin. When it is harsh and cold outside, using a gentle cleanser is as important for your face as it is for your entire body. This is the reason I am loving the Prequel Gleanser Gentle Skin Cleanser- it can be used for face and body! The La Roche Posay Lipikar Gentle Foaming Cleansing Oil is also a very nice (and non-drying) all over cleanser. You can’t go wrong with either of these!

And

Another area that gets dry during winter is my scalp. I typically don’t have a dry scalp or flakes any other time of year, but winter is very unforgiving for everything. Because of the dryness I tend to use a hydrating product on my scalp as a preventative for unsightly flaking. My pick for the past several years is:

Keeping your body moisturized is as important as hydrating your face. Dry skin causes itching and this can be prevented by using a good body lotion immediately after getting out of the shower. Applying lotion before drying your skin helps lock in more moisture. I have a few favorite body lotions that I trust for the coldest, driest weather.

And last, but not least, face creams are essential for locking moisture in and preventing transepidermal water loss. Some of my favorite moisturizers for keeping skin soft, smooth, and radiant are:
