Welcome to Issue 47 of the No BS Beauty Bulletin!

We’re kicking off this week with some exciting updates, juicy beauty news, and a couple of fantastic giveaways! Whether you’re here for the skincare tips, dog tales, or just the laughs, we’ve got something for everyone. For more stories and discussion join us Friday (1-17-2025) at 1:30 pm Central Standard Time for our weekly livestream. Tune in to YouTube Friday to join the fun!

In Juicy Beauty News, we’re diving into hot topics like why you should never use expired skincare (yikes!), how some people are genetically limited in growing long hair (sorry, supplements won’t help), and the buzz about a non-chemical sunscreen from Bioré that’s creating waves in the industry.

In What Did I Buy This Week?, there are some exciting new skincare finds—just don’t tell Cameraman! Speaking of Cameraman, check out this week’s useful hack. It’s one he asked me about recently, and now I can’t wait to share it with all of you!

As always, we’re sharing updates about our furry trio in About the Dogs. Ike had another adventurous moment, but all is well now. And don’t miss the Winner of the Week—exosomes are making waves in skincare, and I’m sharing some of the best products to try.

We’re also highlighting brands doing good, with a special spotlight on Stratia. From replacing lost skincare for wildfire victims to providing space for remote workers, their commitment to community is inspiring. It’s always great to see a brand that gives back in meaningful ways.

This week’s giveaway winners are Sara MS. and Taylor B.! 🎊 Big congratulations to both! Check your emails for details on how to claim your goodies, and remember—giveaways are US-only for now. We love our international readers, but international shipping? Not so much.

Let’s dive in and get started! 😊

Don’t tell Cameraman!

About the Dogs

This week’s “About the Dogs” takes a bit of a dramatic turn—thanks to Ike! While all three dogs are doing well overall, Ike had a moment that left Cameraman in a world of discomfort. Since Cameraman is the only one strong enough to lift Ike in and out of the car, the responsibility often falls on him. Yesterday, while unloading Ike, our big guy decided to jump prematurely. Cameraman instinctively reached out with his left arm to catch him, but between Ike’s weight and gravity, the maneuver caused Cameraman’s elbow to bend the wrong way. Ouch!

Thankfully, Cameraman doesn’t think anything is torn or broken, but he’s been in quite a bit of discomfort ever since. We’re keeping an eye on his arm and hoping for a quick recovery. In the meantime, Ike seems totally unbothered by the whole ordeal and has been his usual happy self.

As for Lincoln and Gabby, they’re both doing great. Lincoln has been his relaxed, blanket-loving self, and Gabby is enjoying her cozy winter routine. Here’s to a calm and injury-free week ahead—fingers crossed! 😊

Winner of the Week - Exosomes

Exosomes are finally having a moment!  Exosomes are small, extracellular vesicles that play a crucial role in cell-to-cell communication by transporting proteins, lipids, and genetic material between cells.  Because of their renewal and regenerative benefits they are now being hyped in a big way!  In 2025 exosomes will become even more popular.

I’ve seen exosomes in several products sold in Korea- brands such as Dermaheal, Curenex, and Hanheal all sell pricey exosome treatments.  Recently RevivSerums added exosomes to their popular SkinMedica TNS dupe Ultimate Serum.

Why should we be interested in Exosomes for our skin?

Exosomes have a long list of benefits, these are just a few of them:

  • Anti-aging - these exosomes naturally contain growth factors which can help skin look and feel more youthful

  • Cell communication - Exosomes assist with communications which can signal repair and healing deep in skin

  • Soothing - exosomes can help with soothing inflammation from skin issues like acne and rosacea, it can also help healing skin damage such as scars

There are two different sources of exosomes, one is from plants and the other is human sources.  Blueberries, pomegranate, and grapes are all common sources for plant based exosomes.  Human stem cells also come from a variety of sources- a common one being mesenchymal stem cells.  At this point I cannot find any studies comparing the effectiveness of the two sources, but I’m hoping research is being done as I write.

My absolute favorite product with exosomes is the Neogen High R Exosome Cream.  This daytime face cream has put many other (more expensive) products to shame. This product uses plant exosomes from Centella Asiatica. I have repurchased this multiple times and it is even AFFORDABLE!!!

Loser of the Week -
Changing Hair Care Products

So this is a strange one for many people, but changing hair care products can wreak havoc on your skin!  Years ago I found a hair brand that I just loved- my hair felt silky, the smell was amazing, it was affordable, and the packaging was convenient.  About a week after changing to this brand my skin started to freak out everywhere.  Breakouts, oiliness, and even itchiness to top it all off.  I was totally dumbfounded as to what dramatically changed my skin so fast.  I always follow a “shower protocol.” This protocol is following a strict order of doing things: shampooing first, conditioning second, cleansing my body third, and cleansing my face last.

After about two weeks of nightmare skin, I decided to change back to my original shampoo just to see what would happen.  Within a few weeks my skin was pretty much all healed and back to normal again (thank goodness)!  So a few months later I went back to try the other hair care brand, and voila- same issues.  I never have guessed that something you use on your hair and rinse out could cause so much skin issues.  So if you are suffering from skin issues such as acne and breakouts I think changing hair care may be a potential solution.

So many little things we use may cause issues - laundry soap, jewelry, toothpaste and many more things could be causing our skin distress without even realizing it.  Still bummed about the shampoo and conditioner I loved but happy to not be going through the ups and downs of unhappy skin!

In Case You Missed It

Brands Doing Good:
Stratia

Stratia has been a brand I’ve been fond of for years. I love supporting smaller independent brands (even better when it is a woman founded brand).   Stratia seems like a brand that always tries to do the right thing, and today is no exception.   Stratia’s founder, Alli Reed, seems to be a standing up to help those in Los Angeles.   I received an email from Alli this week regarding the wildfires in California.

Stratia is offering assistance to those affected in any way they can.

From their email:

  • Free skincare to replace what you’ve lost, delivered to your door by our team.

  • A free space to work at our facility in DTLA for those who work from home.

  • A donation drop-off, sorting, and storage space for folks organizing relief.

It is humbling seeing brands that give back to their community, and I’m proud to be a Stratia customer.  There are not many brands I can say I’m proud to support, but Stratia is definitely one of them.
