About the Dogs
This week has been refreshingly uneventful for Ike, Lincoln, and Gabby—just the way we like it! Everyone has been sticking to their usual routines, enjoying cozy naps, snacks, and plenty of lounging. After the past few hectic weeks, a calm and normal week is a welcome change. Here’s to more of the same! 😊

Winner of the Week - Patience
So today I was scrolling through my normal skincare information sites, instagram, reddit, youtube, etc. I found a post that was interesting. It was someone declaring that The Ordinary 15% Growth Factor Serum was all hype. And you know what? It might be. Honestly, it is too soon to tell. This product has been out for sale for almost a month. The average skin cycle is about 28 to 40 days. The older your age the longer the skin cycle may be. Other conditions (acne, eczema) may also affect the timing of the skin cycle.
A skin cycle is the process of skin cell turnover. This means to notice benefits from most products you must be patient. It is impossible to give any product a few days for you to notice a benefit. That doesn’t mean you may not notice results faster.
Some products I’ve seen skin benefits from quite quickly: SkinMedica TNS Advanced Serum, Geek & Gorgeous Apad Serum, and the Paula’s Choice Clinical Retinol Serum are all products that gave me fast noticeable results. But for many ingredients patience and consistency are key. This also depends on what ingredients your skin is needing. Some people may use these products and not notice overnight results. When it comes to certain ingredients it does seem like people may be too quick to give up on products before they can really benefit from them.
If you are looking for products with faster effects, certain ingredients are known to give faster results for those who may be impatient. These ingredients include glycerin, ascorbic acid, salicylic acid, and glycolic acid. Before piling more products on, give what you are using a fair chance to work before tossing it aside. Peptides, growth factors, and retinoids can take more time to demonstrate their effectiveness. This doesn’t guarantee noticeable results but it does increase the chances for it to benefit your skin.
My game changer products are:
SkinMedica TNS Advanced Serum at Dermstore
Geek & Gorgeous Apad Serum at G&G
Paula’s Choice Clinical Anti-Aging Retinol Treatment at Sephora
Loser of the Week - Scars
Scars on the skin are one of the most difficult imperfections to treat. I’ve had a scar on my hand for about 30 years and it is stubborn, and most likely will be there for eternity. I have a scar on my left cheek from a car accident 20 years ago- this will also most likely be there until I die. There are treatments you can use to mitigate the appearance of scars, and this typically depends on the reason and type of scar you have.
Different types of scars include:
Atrophic Scars- these are typically from acne and include boxcar scars, icepick scars, and rolling scars.
Keloid Scars- these are overgrown scars and appear larger because of excessive production of collagen and are more common on deeper skin tones.
Stretch Mark Scars- these are not commonly thought of as scars but stretch marks are a type of scar. These are purple/bluish line-like marks on skin that may occur from things like weight gain, pregnancy, and growth spurts.
Hypertrophic Scars- these are raised and thick scars that typically stay within the boundary of where the wound occurred. Typically occurring from collagen production during injury but can slightly flatten over time. This is probably the most common type of scar.
Treatments for scars can depend on the reason for the scar, age of the scar, and type of scar. Many scars may not totally disappear, but they can be lessened in appearance by some different treatments. No treatment is going to be a fix-it-all trick and certain treatments target different scars. The earlier you treat the scar the better chances you have to lessen its appearance. In addition to these treatments below, ascorbic acid, red light therapy, sunscreen and retinoids are all going to be options worth considering.
Different scar treatments include:
Topical Products- retinoids, exfoliants, silicone gel sheets, and vitamin e are all great options for affordable treatments you can do yourself.
Microneedling- also known as Collagen Induction Treatment (CIT) because the treatment involves strategic microscopic injuries in skin to produce collagen and lessen the appearance of the scars.
Lasers- lasers such as CO2, Fraxel, and IPL can help to reduce the appearance of scars, it is particularly useful for scars from past acne breakouts.
Microdermabrasion- this is a gentle type of physical exfoliation that exfoliates the surface level and thus reduces the appearance of raised scars.
Plasma Therapy- plasma therapy is a newer technology that some are using for stretch mark scars, this uses plasma to induce collagen production in skin.
Peels- strong in-office peels (Jessner, TCA) are another way to lessen the appearance of scars, especially ones that alter the pigmentation in the skin.
