No BS Bulletin #52 – The Week of Sulfur, Silk, and Skincare Surprises

This week’s Juicy Beauty News is full of exciting (and slightly bizarre) developments in the beauty world. The Ordinary has officially entered the Chinese market through Sephora, while researchers are looking at fish guts (yes, you read that right) as a potential game-changer in anti-aging skincare. Meanwhile, exosomes continue to dominate the conversation, and silk may just be the next big thing for collagen production. On a different note, a California legislator is once again trying to ban minors from purchasing anti-aging skincare—because, apparently, retinol is the new rebellious act of youth.

In What Did I Buy This Week?, I grabbed a mix of skincare and supplements, including a collagen peptide ampoule, a mineral glow powder, and some Life Extension goodies. As for Loser of the Week, it’s time to talk about extreme magnifying mirrors. If you’ve ever stared into one and questioned every life choice you’ve made regarding your skincare routine… you are not alone.

The dogs are handling the deep freeze in their own ways—Ike and Lincoln are over it, refusing to stay outside for more than a few seconds, while Gabby is having the time of her life, zooming around like she doesn’t even notice the subzero temps. She’s finally feeling great, and it shows!

On a positive note, Kiehl’s is proving that some beauty brands do give back. They’ve supported charities like Feeding America, The Trevor Project, and Earth Day America, showing that skincare companies can make a real difference.

And finally, Winner of the Week goes to sulfur! It’s an old-school ingredient that still packs a punch when it comes to acne, rosacea, and even dandruff. Speaking of winners—congratulations to Shihua X.! Check your email for details on how to claim your prize.

Stay warm, stay skeptical of extreme magnifying mirrors, and I’ll see you next week with more beauty news and nonsense! 😊

Made Me Laugh - This just like Ike getting his nails done.

Don’t tell Cameraman!

About the Dogs - The dog days of winter

are proving to be much worse than the dog days of summer—at least if you ask Ike and Lincoln. With temperatures well below zero, their usual outdoor adventures have been reduced to hurried bathroom breaks and quick dashes back inside. Lincoln, our resident optimist, still tries to keep his spirits up, but even he can’t hide his disappointment when he steps outside and feels the icy air hit his paws. And Ike? Let’s just say his grumpy old man attitude is in full effect—he wants no part of this deep freeze!

Gabby, on the other hand, is thriving. Now that she’s feeling better, she’s turned into a little ball of energy. She’s been spotted running the big dogs down outside, which is something we haven’t seen in a long time! While Ike and Lincoln sulk over the cold, Gabby is making the most of it—happy, playful, and completely unbothered by the frigid temps. At least someone is enjoying this weather! 😊

Winner of the Week - Sulfur

Sulfur is a naturally occurring non-metal element found in the Earth's crust that is an important part of proteins and is typically non toxic when used in proper conditions.  Sulfur is also an important ingredient in some skincare products that can be beneficial for treating some skin conditions.   Sulfur can be helpful for some skin issues due to its antibacterial, antifungal, and keratolytic properties.

Sulfur products have been created to specifically help with acne, rosacea, psoriasis, dandruff, and even conditions like scabies and warts.  It is most commonly used as a treatment for stubborn acne that doesn’t respond well to more traditional treatments like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and tretinoin.  Sulfur has strong antibacterial benefits and since bacteria can be a cause of acne, sulfur can help fight it.   In addition to acne, sulfur may also be beneficial for some cases of rosacea and psoriasis due to its mild exfoliating and anti-inflammatory properties.

For some people with stubborn acne, blackheads, or rosacea trying a sulfur product may be helpful.  Sulfur comes in a variety of products - facial cleansers, rinse off masks, and even moisturizers. If you are looking for a beneficial ingredient to help treat acne or other conditions sulfur might be worth checking into!  Some sulfur products worth checking out include:

Loser of the Week - Extreme Magnifying Mirrors

I don’t know why I keep this mirror on my countertop, I need to get rid of it!  I have a lighted mirror that has a 10X magnification.  It does help with managing my eyebrows, but I must say this mirror constantly makes me question my foundation choices.  Almost no makeup looks good at 10X, especially when you are getting a bit older.  Every wrinkle, every dark spot, and every imperfection looks drastically worse when it is magnified times ten!  The next mirror I buy will have zero magnification, if anything, the next mirror I buy will have a soft light/blurring feature!  Lol!
