No BS Bulletin 40

Forty

Welcome to Issue 40 of the No BS Beauty Bulletin!

In this week’s Juicy Beauty News, we’re diving into everything from the potential benefits of grape-derived skin supplements for lightening dark spots to how whole-body deodorants might be more hype than help. Plus, there’s big news as Drunk Elephant issues a voluntary recall due to a production mix-up, and Sol de Janeiro’s success is leading the charge in making body care both fragranced and functional. There’s also promising research on AI-enhanced photography for early skin condition detection, and Europe is taking steps to phase out toxicity testing on animals. The beauty world never fails to keep us on our toes!

In What Did I Buy This Week?, it’s a mix of skincare must-haves and cozy winter gear. From PEACH & LILY’s softening toner to a Bubble Curling Wand, and even a stylish jacket from Athleta—let’s just say Cameraman might need to “look away” for this shopping spree!

Over in About the Dogs, it’s been a week of highs and lows. Sweet Gabby had an emergency vet visit due to pancreatitis, but we’re happy to report she’s now feeling much better after some TLC and a specialized diet. Lincoln, on the other hand, isn’t thrilled with the snow and has been hiding under an electric blanket, while Ike had an exciting (but ultimately unsuccessful) bunny chase in the yard.

This week’s Winner of the Week is collagen and peptide supplements. I’m sharing the latest research on how these supplements might actually help rebuild collagen and slow down the aging process. On the flip side, NSAIDs are the Loser of the Week—you might be surprised to learn how these common painkillers can negatively affect your skin.

And don’t miss Cameraman’s Corner this week! He got me to use the beauty room database for the first time (finally!) and solved our laundry woes with a smart alert system. Oh, and he’s released not one, not two, but three new songs about the beauty room! Be sure to subscribe to my second channel for all the updates and some entertaining tunes.

As always, thank you for being part of the No BS Beauty community. Dive in, enjoy, and don’t forget to check if you’re this week’s giveaway winner! 🎉

About the Dogs

Gabby was sick and went to the emergency vet this Saturday.  She was very nauseous and wouldn’t eat or drink much.  After checking her chart out online and realizing it was literally her 16th birthday (11-15) I made an emergency appointment. I must say I was pretty scared for her.   The vet did some bloodwork and diagnosed her with a bad case of pancreatitis.  Thankfully after several days of a bland diet and nausea meds she is back to being her usual self!  She did enjoy the initial diet of chicken and rice and is now on a specialized gastro canned dog food.

The winter has finally caught up to us with snow flying on Wednesday.  Lincoln is not a fan, he has resorted to hiding under my electric heated blanket.  Ike did have some enjoyment chasing a bunny around the yard, despite Ike giving it his all, the bunny made it to safety!

Winner of the Week -
Collagen & Peptide Supplements

If you pay attention to my Youtube channel you will know that I recently did a video discussing new research that shows collagen peptide supplements may actually be beneficial for the deep layers of our skin.  I’ve been pretty negative on most skincare supplements (with the exception of Heliocare) in the past.  I am still not a fan of most supplements, especially biotin because generally unless you are deficient, it all goes down the drain.

New research is showing that collagen peptides may actually be beneficial, especially to slow down the aging process and allow for new collagen growth.  As we age we tend to lose 1% of our collagen every year.  To combat that collagen peptides, when taken orally, can digest the amino acids in these collagen and peptides supplements to break down and trigger the body to produce more collagen.  Some research shows that certain varieties of collagen may not break down as much and those are transferred to the body into skin and cartilage.

After reading the new research I am recommending people consider adding in a collagen peptide supplement into their anti-aging routine.  I’ve tried a handful of them and by far my favorite is the Vital Proteins Collagen Gummies, but there are many different types of collagen from powders to pills.  If you are interested in the research I will link to that below.

Loser of the Week -
NSAIDS (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)

If anyone is familiar with NSAIDS it is me- from migraines to broken bone pain to arthritis- I’ve taken my fair share over the years.  I never realized that NSAIDS (such as Advil, Ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin) can be a culprit in causing melasma.  These medications can be used orally as well as topically for fever, pain, and headaches.

“NSAIDs are one of the common drug groups to cause skin side effects. The gastrointestinal tract and the skin are the two body systems most likely suffer a side effect with NSAIDs.”

“In one prospective study of nearly 20,000 inpatients, 0.3% of those prescribed an NSAID developed a generalized skin reaction including morbilliform rash, Drug-induced urticaria, angioedema, serum sickness-like reaction and erythema nodosum. In a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials, skin side effects were reported in 1–2% of patients using NSAIDs.”

Interestingly enough, NSAIDS are also associated with other skin disorders such as alopecia, urticaria, and psoriasis.  The only way to treat these reactions is to discontinue treatment with the NSAID and usually the damage that has occurred will need separate treatments.  Is there a way to prevent this from happening?  Total avoidance of NSAIDS, but what are the odds of that happening?  I guess I’d rather treat the migraine or pain and deal with the skin repercussions later…

In Case You Missed It

Cameraman’s Corner

This week, Cameraman scored a major victory—he got Sarah to use the beauty room database for the very first time! 🎉 Now we’re one step closer to finally having an organized system for all the products, and Sarah’s already seeing how much easier it’s going to make keeping track of everything. Progress!

But that’s not all. Cameraman also tackled a totally different issue: stinky laundry. 🧺 He created a genius alert system that changes the upstairs lights to red or green, depending on whether the washer or dryer is done. No more forgetting a load in the washer and dealing with that unpleasant smell later. Problem solved! 🙌

And for all you music fans, Cameraman has outdone himself again, releasing three new songs about the beauty room! 🎶 His creativity knows no bounds, and these tracks are just as entertaining as they are unexpected.

Make sure to head over to the second channel to see all the progress, listen to the new songs, and of course, subscribe to keep up with everything Cameraman is cooking up. You won’t want to miss it!
