Winner of the Week - Cosrx
Cosrx hasn’t had any major new releases for a hot minute, but this week Cosrx is releasing the first products for its haircare line. From a Cosrx press release on their website:
Under the principle that ‘hair is an extension of the skin’, COSRX has expanded our technology into a scientifically proven hair-specific peptide.
PEPTIDE-132 was created through cutting-edge AI molecular modelling technology, paired with efficacy verification on actual hair.
Based on hair science, PEPTIDE-132 is absorbed into the hair and binds precisely to weakened keratin structure. The peptide fits into the keratin like a puzzle piece, filling in the gaps and strengthening the structure of the weakened keratin, restoring hair to a healthy state.
This effect comes from the peptide's characteristics, which have been meticulously engineered down to the molecular structure.

For starters, Cosrx is releasing three new products including a shampoo, conditioner, and a leave-in hair serum. I expect that lineup to increase in size dramatically over the next few years. The scent of these hair products is described as “gender-neutral” with woodsy and citrusy scents. These new products officially launched yesterday and are also currently available at Amazon below (shipped & sold by Cosrx):

Loser of the Week - Sun Bum & Supergoop!
It appears that both Sun Bum and Supergoop! got caught up in marketing hype revolving around some of their sun care products marketed as “reef safe.” The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office has reached a settlement against beauty company Supergoop! for allegedly misleading customers about their sunscreens being reef-friendly and reef-safe. This ruling comes just a few months after another court in California ruled against Sun Bum in a similar case.
In the past marketing claims regarding sunscreens and skincare were typically handled by the US FDA and/or the FTC. The FDA usually handles certain sunscreen regulations but does NOT handle or regulate “reef-safe,” “clean,” or “natural” marketing claims; this would fall to the FTC.
Some things this topic makes me ponder…
Is “reef safe” just marketing and greenwashing?
What are the regulatory standards for companies manufacturing sunscreens?
Are there any long term studies on coral reefs with other chemical filters?
Has it been proven that certain filters are more damaging than others?
Does zinc or titanium dioxide have damaging effects on reefs?
Would the US be better off if we finally approved other sun filters such as Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M, Uvinul A Plus, Uvinul T 150 which appear to have less environmental damage?
Curious to hear your thoughts on this topic so keep them coming by emailing me!
