About the Dogs

Lincoln’s doing his best to play it cool this Fourth of July—his ears twitch at every distant boom, but he squares his shoulders and gives us a “nothing to see here” look as he patrols the yard. Ike, on the other hand, is all in: extra guests mean extra snacks, and he’s strategically positioned himself by the grill in hopeful anticipation. Gabby? She couldn’t care less about fireworks or festivities—she’s happily snoozing through it all, utterly unimpressed by the spectacle. All in all, it’s a perfectly laid-back holiday with our three furballs each doing their own thing.

Winner of the Week -Anessa

Anessa is a Japanese brand owned by Shiseido.  It is widely praised for making some of the best sunscreens in the world. Here's why, in my opinion, Anessa sunscreens stand out:

  1. Superior UV protection

Anessa uses some of the best sun filters out there.   This includes Tinosorb S, Uvinul A+, and Octinoxate, which offer broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection.

  2. Increased sweat and humidity protection

With sweat and moisture Anessa actually becomes stronger thanks to their Thermo Booster Technology.  This makes Anessa a great option for those who participate in summer sports.

  3. Many formula options for different skin types

One thing I love about Anessa is that they have many options for those with different product preferences.  I prefer fragrance-free products and Anessa has an entire (Mild) line for those who dislike scented products. Their Mild line is also free from denatured types of alcohol making it an ideal option for those with sensitive skin.

  4. Anessa’s mineral or chemical versions

I love that Anessa has mineral only options as well as chemical versions.  This gives people the choice of what they want to use while still using Anessa.

Overall, Anessa is a great choice for sun protection, while it isn’t the cheapest brand, it is one of the more trustworthy and reliable brands.

Loser of the Week - Americans

Every year, another beautiful holiday season rolls around. I love the 4th of July—family get-togethers, BBQs, maybe even a beach day if I’m lucky. But one thing stays the same: we’re still losing in the sun protection department.

The FDA continues to drag its feet on approving modern sunscreen filters—some of which have been safely used in other countries for over 30 years.

Uvinul T 150 was introduced in Europe in 1992. Uvinul A+ followed in 2001. That’s nearly a quarter of a century ago! These filters are effective, stable, and already protecting skin around the world. Meanwhile, Americans are stuck with the same tired lineup of filters from the 1990s—filters that break down in the sun, feel greasy, smell weird, and don’t offer great UVA protection.

It’s honestly a disservice. Americans deserve access to sunscreens that actually work. Instead, we're handcuffed to outdated formulas while the rest of the world enjoys invisible, elegant, broad-spectrum protection.

Let freedom ring—and bring on the modern sun filters. Filters that protect all skin tones. Filters that guard against UVA rays. Filters that don’t make us smell like chemical soup. Filters that do a better job reducing our risk of skin cancer.

I’ve gone through almost two bottles of the Numbuzin No. 9 NAD Bio, but I haven’t noticed any difference in my neck wrinkles. Maybe I misunderstood what the product is supposed to do?

New Numbuzin – No. 9 NAD+ PDRN Glow Boosting Toner | First Impressions Review

It’s not going to do anything special for your skin. It has 120 ingredients, which means all the good ones are at tiny percentages. Ingredients have to meet a certain threshold to be effective. Also, many in this product have no proof they do anything—including a ton of those peptides. I think Numbuzin makes mediocre products with make-believe ingredients. If anything, they’re great at marketing, especially when they pay people to hype them up.

I will say Numbuzin has never paid me a dime for anything, and I’ve bought their products on my own. I’ll also add that many peptides work well in very small amounts: for example, one (X50 Anti-Aging) helps fibroblast and elastin production at just 0.001%. All that aside, this serum gives me instant gratification in plumpness and glow—my skin looks more refreshed a few minutes after applying, which my super-dry skin really needs. I’m all about peptides and antioxidants for anti-aging, especially if you can fit them into your morning routine. If you don’t notice benefits after a couple of months, I’d switch it up. Have you tried SkinMedica TNS Ceramide Treatment Cream? I found it helped a bit with my neck wrinkles (though my neck isn’t exactly a flex).
