About the Dogs - Tough News
While Ike and Lincoln are enjoying the fall weather, Gabby was diagnosed with kidney disease in early October. Before my mom passed away in 2016 she had adopted 4 rescue dogs. Gabby was the last one left. For a few weeks, Gabby was still her sweet self, and we tried everything we could - fluid therapy, blood tests, special diets, and medications to help with nausea, appetite loss, and pain.
Sadly, yesterday, Gabby began to suffer. We could see her confusion and discomfort, and it became clear that she was ready to cross the Rainbow Bridge. Gabby passed away peacefully at the vet on October 22 at 11:00 a.m.
I take comfort knowing she’s joined my mom and her rescue brothers and sisters — Gizmo, Gertie, and Gipper. She brought us 16 wonderful years of love and companionship, and she’s left paw prints on all our hearts.

Winner of the Week - Water Softeners
I learned an important lesson this week: always check your water softener!
While my kitchen remodel was underway, one of the electricians unplugged the water softener — and I had no idea. Over the past three weeks, my nails started breaking, and my skin became dry, itchy, flaky, rashy, and even bloody.
At first, I blamed the seasonal change from summer to fall. I slathered on lotion constantly, but nothing helped. My lips were dry, my face was tight, and my entire body itched. I even wondered if I was dehydrated, so I drank more water — but my skin just kept getting worse. Every night when I took off my leggings, the floor looked like a snowy winter day (gross but true!).
Then my eyebrows started flaking like severe dandruff, and a bloody rash appeared on my elbows. That’s when I really started questioning things. Was it a new allergy? A medication reaction? My spray tan? Or something going wrong with my thyroid?
Finally, today, my dad mentioned buying salt for his own water softener, and something clicked: the water softener! I’d been through this before and realized it had to be the culprit behind all my skin problems. Sure enough, I checked and found it unplugged by one of the contractors.
Thank goodness I figured it out! I won’t have to spend the rest of winter feeling like sandpaper. Lesson learned: never underestimate the power of a good water softener.
Loser of the Week - Beef Tallow?!?!
If you are online and into skincare you’ve probably heard of the beef tallow fad. Thankfully this is one fad I’ve decided not to try myself. After reading this post on reddit I’m so glad I stuck with this decision! Here is the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/30PlusSkinCare/comments/1o7d6mg/i_got_suckered_into_trying_beef_tallow/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
I think I’ll pass on: smelling like a hamburger, cystic acne, hours of extractions, milia, and having my dogs want to lick my entire face for hours! It is amazing the lengths some of us will go to for great skin, and maybe there are some people for whom it works well? If any of you have tried it, feel free to let me know your experience!

Brands Doing Good - Deciem
“Deciem, the owner of skin care brands The Ordinary, LoOPHA and NIOD, has pledged to remove one million kilograms of ocean and ocean-bound plastic by 2028.” - Cosmetics Business
To make it happen, the brand is partnering with 4Ocean, an organization dedicated to cleaning up ocean waste around the world. The initiative reflects DECIEM’s growing focus on reducing its environmental footprint — even as it acknowledges the challenges that come with being part of a consumption-based industry.
Currently, 85% of DECIEM’s packaging is made from curb-side recyclable materials, and plastic makes up only about 13% of their total packaging mix. Still, the company says there’s more work to do and is prioritizing long-term collaborations that lead to measurable environmental impact.
